SUSD Raises Donations for Hurricane Katrina Victims

Scottsdale students and staff are coming together for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. From fundraising events to assembling care packages, our schools are lending a helping hand.

High Schools

Arcadia – Students are selling Mardi Gras Beads for $1. The Football Booster Club is donating all proceeds from merchandise sales.

Chaparral – Fundraiser began at last Friday’s football game with Service Learning students collecting from fans during the second quarter. Service Learning will represent all clubs on campus and are having a campus-wide drive this week with proceeds going to the Salvation Army.

Coronado – is partnering with the National Honor Society and Student Council for a coin drive. Additionally, Coronado is holding a sack lunch day and having students donate money that they would have used for lunch.

Desert Mountain – and Service Learning raised more than $8,000 in two days for the victims of Hurricane Katrina! The students, faculty, staff, and parents pulled together in an effort to help out in this critical time and will donate the funds to the American Red Cross. In recognition of his school's efforts, Principal Greg Milbrandt has accepted the hot wing challenge! This week, he will attempt to eat 12 wings in 6 minutes without ranch dressing or water.

Saguaro – teachers and students are helping out supporting Service Learning by having a supply drive to help the flood victims in the Gulf. The care kits consist of soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, washcloths, shampoo, deodorant, and band-aids. In addition, blankets and clothes will be delivered. Service Learning is offering a prize to the second hour homeroom that brings in the most supplies. The school also plans to sell bracelets.

Middle Schools

Ingleside – At the school’s open house, parents donated $1,300 in less than two hours. Students and student government are working on a fundraiser.

Mohave – Student Council is asking students to bring an extra dollar to the next dance to be donated through the council to the American Red Cross.

Cocopah – Student Council in conjunction with the Cocopah Community has raised approximately $3,000 in two days for the American Red Cross disaster relief fund. In addition, student council has voted to donate 10 percent of magazine drive sales to the Red Cross fund.

Supai – students rasied $3,108.71 with the Great Supai Penny Race. The money will be donated to the American Red Cross.

Desert Canyon – Students worked with the PTO to raise money to send to the Red Cross for the victims of Katrina. They set a goal of raising $,3000 in three days. They raised more than double their goal, $6,500 in just three days!

Mountainside – In addition to other fundraising activities, a special care package filled with diapers, wipes, toys, and a blanket was assembled by a Junior Girl Scout at the school.

Additionally, the school's National Junior Honor Society will be holding a community-wide car wash for the victims of hurricane Katrina from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, October 1, at the school, 11256 N. 128th St., (Via Linda and 128th St.)

Elementary School

Yavapai – students raised $449 to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The money will be sent to the Terrebonne School District in Louisiana to help them at their schools. They are need of new books and supplies. Thank you to Yavapai's wonderful children for donating their change to this important cause.

Cochise – Students conducted a fund raising driven the week of September 19. At total of $2,000 was raised and a check was presented to the American Red Cross.

Hopi – Students raised $3,455.85 for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Students particpated in tthe fundraiser by donating at least $1 to wear a hat all day.

Cherokee – Students raised more than $31,020.52 that will be donated to Habitat for Humanity.

Sequoya – The Student Council sponsored "Operation Donation" Dollar Drive, to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Sequoya's students raised $5,044.31 from Sept. 7 - Sept. 14., which was sent to the American Red Cross's fund in support of Gulfcoast residents in need.

Navajo – The Student Council held a change drive and raised $428.25 to send to Terrebonne School in Louisiana.

Tonalea – First grade teachers sent home a zip lock bag with each student, containing a letter explaining a project – Together We Can “Change” the World. They are collecting change and will donate proceeds to the American Red Cross.

Tavan – Fifth graders are spearheading the “Quarters for the French Quarter” campaign.

Copper Ridge – PTO and students are having a fundraiser and collecting school supplies.

Pueblo – Fourth grader initiated “Coins for Katrina” drive. Students raised more than $2,100 for Katrina victims, and Sunflower Market will match the donation. The money will be donated to the American Red Cross.

Laguna – Laguna Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts troops are collecting basic needs items. They will be packaging and sending them along. Families donated about 100 boxes of food, clothing, toiletries, backpacks, and toys for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Girl Scout troops sorted all items into labeled boxes for ease of distribution and delivered them to the Salvation Army. Girl Scouts members wrote messages of love and encouragement and attached them to the many toys and stuffed animals that were donated for children displaced by the disaster.

Kiva – Dollar Drive and will donate proceeds to the American Red Cross. In just one day, Kiva kids raised over $4,500!

Cheyenne – PTO “Coins for Katrina” collecting loose change and will donate proceeds to the American Red Cross.

Pima – Mrs. Baker's sixth grade class is sponsoring a fundraiser. The class that donates the most money to the American Red Cross will win an ice cream party.

Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center – Student Council is in the process of pulling representatives from all classrooms to work together to raise funds. They are ordering Hurricane Katrina bracelets to sell, there are donation cans in the front office, there is discussion of a carwash and an evening talent show with kids, parents and teachers. Students also have written and sent off Welcome to Arizona letters to the evacuees.

Hohokam – Students wrote letters and collected items for kids staying at the Veterans Coliseum in Phoenix. A student teacher also purchased pencils, notebooks and other necessities for learning and delivered them personally to the Coliseum.

Zuni – Thanks to the efforts of our Zuni families and staff, we sent an entire U-Haul full of clothes, water, diapers, and other much needed items to the Salvation Army on Friday, September 9th. Our fifth grade students sorted and packaged items to fill 120 personal care kits for evacuees. The fifth grade is still collecting donations to the American Red Cross and Noah's Wish (an organization that rescues domestic animals). Our donations are being matched dollar for dollar by the PGA-Gainey Ranch. Our current total is $8,240. Our goal is $10,000.
