MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING
OF THE GOVERNING BOARD
SCOTTSDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 48

A Special Meeting of the Governing Board of the
Scottsdale Unified School District, #48, Maricopa County, was called to order
at 6:10 PM, at the Scottsdale School District Education Center Board Room,
3811 North 44th Street, Phoenix, Arizona. Board Members in attendance were Barbara A. Newby, President; Shari Avianantos; and Thomas C. Carey. Sandra Zapien-Ferrero arrived at 6:20 PM. David R. Goldstaub was absent. Associate Superintendent Don Jefferies, and Attorney Mary Ellen Simonson were also present. A quorum was present. The Board convened in Executive Session for: A. Discussion/consultation with Board Attorneys to consider the Board’s position, and instruct its attorneys regarding that position on pending litigation regarding Joseph Hills vs. Scottsdale Unified School District, pursuant to A.R.S. §38-431.03(A)(3) and (4). B. Discussion/consultation
with Board Attorneys to consider the Board’s position, and instruct its
attorneys regarding that position on potential litigation regarding the
District’s expulsion policy, pursuant to A.R.S. §38-431.03(A)(3) and (4). At 7:10 PM, the Board
reconvened the Special Meeting and at 7:15 convened in another Executive
Session for: C. Consideration
of an appeal regarding the Hearing Officer’s Recommendation for Student
#20512, pursuant to A.R.S. §15-843 in general and A.R.S. §15-843(B)
specifically. At 9:10 PM, the Special Meeting was reconvened and adjourned. Dated this 31st day of January 2002. The
