MINUTES OF THE WORK/STUDY MEETING

OF THE GOVERNING BOARD

SCOTTSDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 48

October 25, 2001

 

A Work/Study Meeting of the Governing Board of the Scottsdale Unified School District, #48, Maricopa County, originally scheduled for October 23, 2001, was called to order at 7:05 PM, at the Scottsdale School District Education Center Board Room, 3811 North 44th Street, Phoenix, Arizona.  President Carey called upon Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero to lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Board Members in attendance were Thomas C. Carey, President; Sandra Zapien-Ferrero, Clerk; Shari Avianantos; and David Goldstaub.  Barbara A. Newby was absent.  Superintendent Barbara F. Erwin, and Attorney Jack LaSota were also present.  A quorum was present.  President Carey welcomed approximately 20 visitors.

 

President Carey, noting the absence of Mrs. Newby, sent the Board’s and the District’s most sincere condolences on the loss of her husband, Richard.

 

Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero moved to approve the Agenda.  Mr. Goldstaub seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 4 – 0.

President Carey congratulated all the recipients.

 

President Carey, on behalf of the Governing Board and the District, congratulated Dr. Bill Johnson, the District’s Chief of Facilities and Operations Officer, on receiving his doctorate from Arizona State University.

 

Mr. Goldstaub, requested the addition of Public Comment to the Agenda, and asked that Public Comment be included on all Agendas in the future.

 

Public Comment

Patrick Cunningham spoke in support of the upcoming Bond, Capital Override and M&O Override election on November 6, 2001.

 

 

Action Items

Mrs. Avianantos moved to approve Action Item VI. A. Approval of Minutes of October 9, 2001 Regular Board Meeting.  Mr. Goldstaub seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 4 – 0.

 

Mr. Goldstaub moved to approve Action Item VI. B. Approval of Minutes of October 9, 2001 Special Board Meeting.  Mrs. Avianantos seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 4 – 0.

 

Mr. Goldstaub moved to approve Action Item VI. C. Approval of Minutes of October 12, 2001 Special Board Meeting.  Mrs. Avianantos seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 4 – 0.

Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero moved to approve the Consent Agenda in its entirety.  Mrs. Avianantos seconded the motion. 

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 4 – 0.

 

Work/Study

Item VIII. A. Student Services Update.  Dr. Barbara F. Erwin introduced Dr. Althe Wood, Executive Director of Student Services.  Dr. Wood gave an update on Student Services, introducing several directors in her department who gave their individual reports to the Board. 

 

Mr. Tom Bartz, Director of Vocational/Technical Education, spoke about Technology and Vocational students and the value of those classes to the students, especially in today’s world.  Dr. Erwin, with Mr. Bartz concurring, stated that she would like to see technology as a graduation requirement for SUSD in the future.  Dr. Erwin also acknowledged Mr. Bartz, stating how fortunate Scottsdale is to have him in our District.

 

Mr. John Baird, Director of Service Learning, spoke about the wonderful things the students are doing in Service Learning.  Joining him in his presentation were four SUSD students, who each gave a wonderful report on what they are doing for Service Learning.  Those students were, Meredith Kruse, Desert Mountain High School; Christian Sanft, Coronado High School, Bryan Valdivia, Coronado High School; and Evan Larken, Saguaro High School.

 

Ms. Milissa Wolven, Director of Alternative Education, spoke about her program, Sierra Vista Academy and their commitment to their students.  Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero commented that she would like to see this program as an alternative to expulsion.

 

In closing, Dr. Wood read a passage from Hero’s Journey, and thanked the Board for giving her department the opportunity to serve the District.

 

 

President Carey thanked Dr. Wood and her staff for their excellent presentation and for the work they do.

Tuesday, November 13, 2001 – 7:00 PM – Regular Board Meeting

Tuesday, November 27, 2001 – 7:00 PM – Work/Study Meeting

 

Dr. Erwin noted that a Special Meeting might be called prior to the meeting of November 13, 2001, to approve the Guaranteed Maximum Price and Design of Supai Middle School.

 

At 9:00 PM, Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero moved to adjourn the meeting.  Mr. Goldstaub seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 4 – 0.
