SPECIAL MEETING -WORK/STUDY

OF THE GOVERNING BOARD

SCOTTSDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 48

 

 

 

May 29, 2001

 

A Special Meeting – Work/Study of the Governing Board of the Scottsdale Unified School District, #48, Maricopa County, was called to order at 6:35 PM, at the Scottsdale School District Education Center Board Room, 3811 North 44th Street, Phoenix, Arizona.  President Carey called upon Mr. Goldstaub to lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Board Members in attendance were Thomas C. Carey, President; Shari Avianantos; and David Goldstaub.  Sandra Zapien-Ferrero, Clerk, arrived at 6:38 PM; and Barbara A. Newby arrived at 6:45 PM.  Superintendent Barbara F. Erwin was also present.  A quorum was present.  President Carey welcomed approximately 17 visitors.

 

Mrs. Avianantos moved to approve the Agenda.  Mr. Goldstaub seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 3 – 0 (Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero and Mrs. Newby had not yet arrived at the meeting).

 

Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero arrived at the meeting at 6:38 PM.

 

Mr. Carey noted that Sequoya Elementary School was named as a Blue Ribbon School and congratulated them on this honor.  Dr. Erwin also congratulated Sequoya.

 

Consent Agenda

Item VI. A. Authorization of New Signer on District checking Accounts

Item VI. B. Authorization of Signature Plates

Item VI. C. Personnel Actions

 

Mrs. Avianantos moved to approve the Consent Agenda.  Mr. Goldstaub seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 4 – 0 (Mrs. Newby had not yet arrived at the meeting).

 

Mr. Carey offered congratulations to Ms. Ann Boyle, the new administrator for Curriculum and Instructions. 

 

Mrs. Barbara A. Newby arrived at the meeting at 6:45 PM.

 

Public Comment

Patrick Cunningham, a member of the Total Community Process (TCP) committee, spoke on the Bond Election and also reviewed some of the TCP committee’s recommendations.

 

Mark Villalpando spoke on the Bond Election and in favor of projects that would have an impact on the District.

 

Marc Osborn spoke on the Bond Election and on a balance on the size of a bond to the amount of a tax increase.

 

Deanna Sanft spoke in support of a Bond Election and in support of the high school portion of the bond.

 

Mary-Jeanne Fincher spoke in support of building high school #6 and in support of neighborhood schools.

 

Work/Study on Bond Election

Mr. Bob Flach, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations, and Mr. Bill Johnson, Assistant Superintendent for Facilities and Operations, gave a presentation on the Bond Election and those projects that would be proposed in the Bond Election.  Discussion ensued on the  proposed projects for the Bond Election.  Mrs. Newby, for the record, did not want to move forward with any recommendation until she had seen a list of prioritized projects from the ’97 Bond.  The Board discussed a proposal by Mr. Goldstaub. 

At 8:48 PM, the meeting was adjourned.
